History of ITE Batu Lintang Campus
18 Apr 2024

The institute began at the end of 1947 with the recruitment of 19 trainee teachers, including those from Sabah and Brunei Darussalam. Initially, the training was held at the Malay Madrasah, Jalan Jawa (now Jalan P. Ramlee) Kuching.

The Institute was moved to its present site in mid -1948 and officially opened on 1 July 1948 under the name of Batu Lintang Training Center and School. This site was the site of a prisoner of war concentration camp during the Japanese occupation. It is estimated that the camp once accommodated 3,000 prisoners during the Japanese occupation (1942-1945).

Ten years later, the training center changed its name to Batu Lintang Training College. In 1967, the college changed its name again to Batu Lintang Teachers College (MPBL). MPBL was officially upgraded to an institute on 1 April 2006 and was known as the Batu Lintang Teaching Institute (IPBL). With the amendment of the Education Act 1996, Chapter 9 Section 42-49 on 4 December 2008, the institute changed its official name again and is now known as the Institute of Teacher Education, Batu Lintang Campus (IPGKBL).
